Maftei Pop (12 June 1804? – 15 March 1952) was a Romanian longevity myth who allegedly lived to 148 years old.

Biography[]

Maftei Pop claimed that he was born in the village of Valea Loznei, Salaj County, Romania on 12 June 1804. He was wandering around Transylvania, fleeing from his native village because he killed a young boy accidentally. He settled in Oşoi, Ciubancuța, Cluj County, Romania at the age of 85 (or 40s according to other sources).

According to studies made during his lifetime, at the age of 148, he had poor sight and hearing, couldn't bow well but had a formidable strength at his age. His mother was allegedly lived to 110 and his sister was 102.

Maftei Pop died in Osoi, Ciubancuta, Cluj County, Romania on 15 March 1952, at the claimed age of 147 years, 273 days.

The mayor of Recea Cristur in Cluj, Rus Laurian Alexandru, confirms that there are documents attesting that Maftei Pop lived to 148 years. Maftei Pop was mentioned by academician Constantin Ion Parhon in his 1955 book Biology of Ages. He was also mentioned by Ana Aslan in an interview with journalist and writer Mihai Stoian in the 1970s.
