Margarete Grahl (15 October 1907 – 2018) was a German supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she has been one of the oldest living person in the federal state of Berlin, Germany.
Biography
Margarete Grahl was born on 15 October 1907 in Germany. Together with her parents and brother, she moved to Berlin in the 1920s. She later trained as a typist and worked until 1942 as a secretary. She then gave up being a secretary and worked at home as a seamstress, which she did for a long time. She married and had a daughter, Barbara, who married Volker Lehne at a young age and bore Margarete two grandchildren: Mario and Kerstin.
During World War 2, a bomb destroyed the house in which Margarete lived with her parents. After the incident, she moved into an apartment with her family. Her brother died in a concentration camp, leaving behind his daughter, who Margarete raised.
Margarete continued sewing until she was 90. She also loved to travel, visiting places such as Thuringia or the Baltic Sea. As a pensioner, she went to Mannheim, Baden-Wurttemburg, to see her niece after many years. In 1997, aged 90, she went to London to visit her granddaughter Kerstin, which was also the first time she flew in an aeroplane. She didn’t move into an assisted living facility until she was a centenarian.
Margarete Grahl died in 2018 in Pankow, Berlin, Germany, at the age of 110. At the time of her death, she was among the top 20 oldest living people in Germany.
