Dr. Margarete Thurner (2 February 1913 – 21 April 2023) was an Austrian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Margarete Thurner was born in Austria-Hungary (now Austria) on 2 February 1913. She was married and had three children. She worked as a lawyer and a notary until she retired at the age of 72.

As a centenarian, Thurner could still drive independently, and she enjoyed fresh air in the wooded areas of Hernals, Vienna – her district of residence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she did not contract the virus or even catch a cold.

In February 2023, Thurner celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. For the occasion of her 110th birthday, she was visited by the district mayor, Peter Jagsch, who presented her with a card containing messages of congratulations.

Margarete Thurner died in Hernals, Vienna, Austria on 21 April 2023 at the age of 110 years, 78 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Vienna (after Anna Dixel), and was also the third-oldest known living person in Austria (after Margarete Troestl and Dixel).
