Biography[]

Margarethe Petermeier was born in Schmiedeberg in the Riesengebirge, German Empire (now Kowary, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland) on 24 September 1910. At a young age, she actively supported her family on their farm. At the age of 20, she got her first job in the fish kitchen on a ship in northern Germany. She later made her living sewing ties and tablecloths. During World War II, her husband had to go to the front as a soldier but died. At the age of 50, she married her second husband, who worked as a truck driver, and was happily married with him until his early death. Petermeier did not have children.

After the war, she always looked after elderly people from the neighborhood in the Diessemer district, doing shopping and housework for them until she herself enjoyed help from others. She continued to live on her own until she was 109. After that, she moved into a nursing home. Reportedly, she was still very fit.

Margarethe Petermeier died in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany on 2 December 2020 at the age of 110 years, 69 days.
