Margit Szemenyei (15 August 1907 – 26 May 2016) was a Romanian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Romania at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Szemenyei was born in Chisineu-Cris, Arad County, Austria-Hungary (present-day Romania) on 15 August 1907. Her father died at the age of 92 and mother at the age of 52. She had three siblings. She was born as Roman Catholic of the Hungarian nationality. In 1933, she moved to Caransebes and started working in Mundus, a furniture-manufacturing company. During World War II, her husband was imprisoned in Soviet Union (present-day Russia). They had one son who died around 2002.
In 2015, she had 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She became the oldest known living person in Romania, following the death of 112-year-old Maria Tudor on 22 March 2016.
Szemenyei died in Caransebes, Caras-Severin County, Romania on 26 May 2016 at the age of 108 years, 285 days. Following her death, then 108-year-old Elena Siriteanu became the oldest known living person in Romania.
