Maria Luisa Mercedes Echeandia Cumpiano (11 September 1887 – 25 December 1997) was a Puerto Rican supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2012. At the time of her death, she may have been the oldest known living person in Puerto Rico.
Biography[]
Maria Echeandia Cumpiano was born in Rincon, Puerto Rico on 11 September 1887. Her parents were Teodoro Echeandia (1846–1907) and Julia Cumpiano (1845–1928).
She married Spanish-born Jose Trigo in 1917. The couple had four children: Jose (1918–2012), Julio (1920–2017), Maria (1921–2014), and Ana (1927–1943). Jose Trigo died in 1956, after nearly 40 years of marriage.
She may have become the oldest known living person in Puerto Rico, following the death of 111-year-old Pedro Zorrilla Caballero on 2 September 1997.
Echeandia Cumpiano died in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, on 25 December 1997 at the age of 110 years, 105 days.
