Maria Rodriguez Sanchez [Spanish: María Rodríguez Sánchez] (24 January 1913 – 21 December 2023) was a Spanish supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Maria Rodriguez Sanchez was born in Los Barrios, Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain on 24 January 1913. She started working at the age of nine, running errands and cleaning for women in her town.

In 1931, she married Eduardo Guerrero, with whom she had three children (two sons and one daughter). Her husband was wounded during the Second World War. She got widowed at the age of 42. After her husband's death, she had to work in order to help raise her children.

Later Life[]

She worked as a matutera, traveling to Portugal, Gibraltar, and Jerez de la Frontera, dealing with tobacco, coffee, and fabrics. On some of her trips, she was accompanied by her friends Pepa and Maria la del Carbon. In 1971, she went to work in Bilbao and Candanchu.

In 1980, Maria's only daughter, Pepa, died at the age of 47. Following her daughter's death, she took care of her nine grandchildren while working in the store below her house in El Palmarillo, where she lived until 2015.

At the age of 109, she was still able to read and sing.

In January 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Maria Rodriguez Sanchez lived with one of her granddaughters in Los Barrios, Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain where she died on 21 December 2023 at the age of 110 years, 331 days. She was the oldest known living person in Andalusia at the time of her death.
