Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero [Spanish: María Salud Ramírez] (16 September 1913 – 16 October 2022) was a Mexican centenarian. She was best known as the inspiration for the character Mama Coco in the Disney Pixar movie “Coco”.

Biography[]

Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero was born in Mexico on 16 September 1913. In 2015, she was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Inspiration for the character of Mama Coco[]

Ramirez Caballero's family and friends claims she was the inspiration for the character of Mama Coco in the Disney Pixar movie “Coco”, but that the film's producers have not given her recognition. However, the authorities of Santa Fe de la Laguna gave her official recognition, and appointed her ambassador of the region's artisans.

As a consequence, the city of Santa Fe de la Laguna became more famous and welcomed more tourists. Despite that, Ramirez Caballero said herself that she is not looking for recognition or money, although the way her life has changed after the movie's release made her happy.

Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero died in Santa Fe de la Laguna, Michoacan, Mexico on 16 October 2022, at the age of 109 years, 30 days. The Secretary of Tourism for the State of Michoacan, Roberto Monroy, verified the information in a statement grieving her passing.
