Maria Souto Martinez (28 March 1915 – 22 August 2024) was a Spanish-born Uruguayan centenarian who was the oldest living person in Uruguay at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Maria Souto Martinez was born in A Coruna, Galicia, Spain on 28 March 1915. Her mother died at the age of 36. Maria and her sister, Remedios, moved to Uruguay when they were around 7 or 8 years old, under the care of an uncle and aunt. At some point, she married Fernando Urbin, but they did not have children.
On 6 November 2022, following the death of 108-year-old Monica Rodriguez, she became the oldest known living person in Uruguay.
Maria Souto Martinez died in Montevideo, Uruguay on 22 August 2024 at the age of 109 years, 147 days. Following her death, then 109-year-old Teresa Bottazzi, became the oldest living person in Uruguay.
