Maria Varas Hernandez (15 February 1910 – 20 October 2020) was a Spanish supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.
Biography[]
Varas Hernandez was born in San Juan de la Nava, Avila, Castile and Leon, Spain, on 15 February 1910. Her father died when she was young and she needed to start working at a young age. She married a farmer from San Juan de la Nava, Faustino Yuste Hernandez, and when she was 30 years old they moved to Navaluenga. They had 5 children (2 deceased as of February 2020). Her husband died at the age of 82.
In February 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday. At that time, she had 3 living children: Maria (aged 82), Mariano (aged 79) and Faustino (aged 76). She also had 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. When asked about the secret of her long life, she said "working hard and eating little". She lived with her son, Faustino.
Varas Hernandez died in Navaluenga, Avila, Castile and Leon, Spain on 20 October 2020 at the age of 110 years, 248 days.
