Marie Arlene LeVan (3 September 1908 – 29 August 2019) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2020.
Biography[]
Marie LeVan was born in Pennsylvania, USA, on 3 September 1908 as the daughter of Arthur B. LeVan and Margaret Schweitzer. Marie was a member of the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) – then Saint Joseph College’s – original class of 1936. She was raised in the South End of Hartford, Connecticut, and always wanted to attend college.
After graduating from USJ, LeVan launched her teaching career in Berlin, where she taught for 25 years before moving to the Meriden school system. In addition to being an English teacher, she also taught social studies, math, and American government. She never married nor had children.
After years of teaching, LeVan held the position of Director of Pupil Personnel Services and earned a Guidance Counselor License. She retired in 1973. LeVan visited every state in the United States, and other countries such as Europe, Egypt, and northern Africa. LeVan’s brother, Malvern Arthur LeVan (1912–2011), died at the age of 99. On 3 September 2018, she celebrated her 110th birthday.
Marie LeVan died in Meriden, Connecticut, USA, on 29 August 2019, a few days shy of her 111th birthday.
