Marina Femke (Rien) van der Es-Siewers (4 March 1913 – 11 March 2024) was a Dutch supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in the Netherlands.
Biography[]
Marina van der Es-Siewers was born in Van Ewijcksluis, North Holland, Netherlands on 4 March 1913. Her father had a job as a fisherman. She married and gave birth to a son. In 1974, she moved to the town of Hippolytushoef, where she lived independently until the age of 93 in 2006, when she broke her thigh after falling down the stairs. After that, she moved into a nearby nursing home until its closure in 2020. She then moved to a nursing home in nearby Wieringerwaard but moved back to Hippolytushoef in 2022. Her husband Henk died in 1998.
Despite her mother having died at age 54 and her father in his early 60s, she did had a niece who died at age 93.
She became the oldest known living person in the Netherlands, following the death of 110-year-old Leny Mackenbach on 7 December 2023. On 4 March 2024 she celebrated her 111th birthday, becoming the first living supercentenarian in the Netherlands to reach this age since 23 July 2021 (Maria Luisa Benjamin's 111th birthday), and the first living person in the continental part of the kingdom since 16 July 2017 (Anne Brasz-Later's 111th birthday).
Marina van der Es-Siewers died in Hippolytushoef, North Holland, Netherlands on 11 March 2023 at the age of 111 years, 7 days. Following her death, then 110-year-old John Huang was reported as the oldest known living person in the Netherlands.
