Biography[]

Early Life and Family[]

Marion Roth was born on 11 November 1908 to Samuel and Edna (née Solomon) Carey in Chester, Pennsylvania. When she was 14, her mother died, and her father eventually remarried. In addition to her two sisters, Loretta and Ellen/Ella, her father subsequently had two more daughters, Winifred and Olive, with his second wife Corinthea.

Roth received a BA from West Chester State Teachers College, and later received a Masters Degree in counselling from Villanova University. She also attended the Phila Art Institute, Temple University, and the University of Delaware.

Roth initially worked as a teacher at East Fallowfield Elementary School in Pennsylvania, before going on to work as a high school counsellor in Delaware for many years. She eventually retired in her sixties. She also had a second career as an artist. She was married to Frederick Roth, who died in 1966. The couple had one son, also called Frederick. At the time of her death, Roth had two grandchildren (one of whom is deceased) and three great-grandchildren.

Later Life[]

Roth moved to a senior living community in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, in the late 1990s. She lived independently in her own apartment until her 102nd birthday, before moving in to the assisted living section of the facility. She credited her longevity to eating a lot of butter, cheese, chocolate, and potato chips.

On her 108th birthday, shortly after the 2016 US Presidential election, Roth told reporters that she "didn't like Donald Trump". On her 109th birthday in 2017, she rode on the Spirit of Philadelphia ship for the first time. She died on 17 January 2020 at the age of 111 years, 67 days.
