Biography[]

Marthe Hallak was born in Homs, Ottoman Empire (present-day Syria) on 20 July 1913. She was orphaned at the age of 5, and was raised by nuns in a boarding school in Lebanon. She fled it, and began to work at the age of 14 in a care in Syria.

Hallak married a French military she met in Lebanon, and moved with him to France in 1941. She raised alone their 5 children. After World War II, she followed her husband in Germany, then they returned in France again. Her husband's last posting (when they still were living together) was in Orleans. She later divorced her husband, as she said he was a womanizer.

As of her 104th birthday in 2017, Hallak was still living alone in her flat in Argonne neighbourhood in Orleans. She used to play tarot each tuesday with the Friendly Club of Retired People Les Aydes. In August 2019, she moved in a nursing home in Sucy-en-Brie.

COVID-19 Survival and Later[]

Between March and June 2020, Hallak caught COVID-19 ; she coughed a bit and was very tired, but has recovered as of June 2020. She was upset about the restrictions caused by the virus: "Since several weeks, I've mostly stayed in my room. It's very unpleasant." However, the virus itself didn't afraid her: "As long as my children aren't ill, I'm not worried."

On her 109th birthday, Hallak was offered a painting depicting a Lebanese cedar. In July 2023, she celebrated her 110th birthday. At the time, she was still able to dance and was said to have a great memory.

Marthe Hallak died in Limeil-Brevannes, Val-de-Marne, Ile-de-France, France on 15 November 2023 at the age of 110 years, 118 days. She was the oldest known living person in Ile-de-France region and in Val-de-Marne department at the time of her death.
