Biography[]

Martta Nurmela was born in Simo, Lapland, Russian Empire (now Finland) on 12 October 1912. Her family worked as dairy farmers, and were responsible for looking after and taking care of cows.

In October 2021, Nurmela celebrated her 109th birthday, which was held by her relatives. She was visited by Ranua’s representatives at her nursing home, and was given a bouquet of flowers as a present from them. The representatives were Mayor Tuomas Aikkila, Municipal Council Chairman Tatu Hietala (who is also Nurmela’s grandson), and Welfare Committee Chairman Sirkka Illikainen. Although Nurmela was hard of hearing and was also no longer able to engage in conversations, she was still aware of her 109th birthday, and she also enjoyed celebrating it as well.
