Mary Ellen Couch (née Burks; 11 November 1912 – 15 March 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.

Biography[]

Mary Couch was born as Mary Ellen Burks in Fitzgerald, Georgia, USA, on 11 November 1912. Her parents were Ollie and Estella (née Hands) Burks. At the age of five, she moved to Michigan, where she resided until her death in 2023.

As a young woman, Couch was the secretary of the Detroit Stars Negro League Baseball team, and she stood with activists like Rosa Parks to demand equal rights for all.

She married the love of her life, Archie Couch, on 5 November 1932. The couple had nine children. Her husband died in April 1980.

In November 2022, Couch celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. She attributed her longevity to her faith in God. At the time of her 110th birthday, she could still walk with the help of a walker.

Mary Couch died in Southfield, Michigan, USA, on 15 March 2023, at the age of 110 years, 124 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Michigan, after Bonita Gibson.
