Mary Gentry (née Griffin; 4 September 1897 – 6 October 2009) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Mary Griffin was born in Henry County, Alabama, USA on 4 September 1897 to Jim and Callie Griffin. She attended elementary school in Newville, Alabama; high school at the Baptist Bible Institute in Newton, Alabama; college at Troy State Normal School and Peabody College. Her first teaching job was at Pike Road, Alabama, where she met E. H. Gentry. After they married, Mr. Gentry held positions in the educational systems of Cullman and Lineville. The couple had two children: Dr. James H. Gentry, and Dr. Anne Johnson Cody.

She was very active in many organizations of the Baptist Church.

Gentry died of natural causes in Aliceville, Alabama, USA on 6 October 2009 at the age of 112 years, 32 days. At the time of her death, she had two children, 10 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. That time, Gentry was the 14th-oldest living person in the USA and the 29th-oldest living person in the world.
