Biography[]

Mary Harris was born in Ithaca, New York, USA on 13 May 1911 to Italian immigrants, Joseph and Concetta (Delmonte) Petrillose. She was born prematurely and only weighed 3.5 pounds at birth; she was not expected to survive past infancy.

She married James Richard Harris from North Lexington, North Carolina in August 1937. During their 66 years of marriage, they ran a dry cleaning business and dairy farm in New York. They later retired to Florida, where they spent the last several decades before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Harris and her husband later moved in to the Alexian Village of Tennessee in 2000, where she resides today. Her husband died in September 2003.

On her 110th birthday in 2021, Harris has two daughters, five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren (possibly more).

Around 19 September 2021, following the death of Pearlie Williams, Harris became the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

Harris’ age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek, Oliver Trim, and Robert Young, and validated by the GRG on 13 May 2023, her 112th birthday.

Mary Harris currently lives in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, USA, at the age of 113 years, 214 days. At the age of 112, she still uses a walker to move around her room and uses a scooter to get to the dining hall for meals. She is currently the second-oldest known living person in the United States, after Naomi Whitehead.
