She came to Texas as a prairie schooner in 1820 settling in Cherokee County. She married Isaac Power. In 1979 Henderson Price wrote this about Mary: "Granny" Powers was one of the earlist settlers in this County (Tarrant Co., Texas) and who told stories of her and her husband riding their 1150 acres of land of their own, plus the free range available, for a week or two at a time looking for their cattle. Their cattle ranged from Tarrant County to the Brazos River. She also told stories of the Indians living in this vicinity at that time. She rode the country in a side saddle, smoked a clay pipe with a cane stem after each meal, and finally lived to the ripe old age of 115 years. She could carry an 8 quart bucket of water 250 yards from her well when she was 100 years old. She also made her own garden and worked it when she was nearing the century mark.
