Mary Kate Byrne (née Stynes) (14 August 1904 – 31 December 2012) was an Irish centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Ireland since the death of Statia Kealy on 23 September 2011 until her own death.

Biography[]

Byrne was born in Ireland (then part of the UK), on 14 August 1904. She married William Byrne, who died in 1960. They had 4 children (2 of which predeceased her). Byrne broke her hip after a fall at the age of 105, but made a recovery. Byrne was also known by her nicknames "Polly" and "Poppy".

Following Statia Kealy's death on 23 September 2011, Byrne was Ireland's oldest person. She died on New Year's Eve 2012, aged 108 years, 139 days. Margaret O'Connell became Ireland's oldest person after her death.
