Mary Misao Koyano (née Nakahiro; 3 October 1911 – 4 October 2021) was a Japanese-born American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Washington.

Biography[]

Mary Koyano was born as Misao Nakahiro in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan on 3 October 1911. She was married to Naohide Koyano, with whom she had five children: Henry, Arthur, Chizuko, Joyce, and Victor.

At some point, Koyano and her husband emigrated to the United States. During their emigration, they anglicized their names to Henry and Mary. They lived in Seattle, Washington.

Koyano and her husband owned and worked in their Seattle restaurant, Maximum Cafe. She later worked in the Seattle University cafeteria until she retired in her 70s.

Koyano was an avid gardener and prolific poet, winning several awards for her poetry. She was very devoted to her family. Her favorite activities were eating candy, watching sports, and singing the U.S. national anthem.

Koyano was a longtime resident of Seattle, Washington. On 3 October 2021, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.

Mary Koyano died on 4 October 2021, the day after her 110th birthday. She was survived by her son Victor, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
