Mary Nicholson (12 January 1915 – c.4 August 2022), known as "Polly", was a British centenarian who may have been the oldest person to survive COVID-19 twice, until Iris Estay survived COVID-19 for the second time in March 2021.

Biography[]

Mary Nicholson was born in England, UK on 12 January 1915. She has Scottish ancestry. Her mother died from diabetes when she was five years. Five years later, her father Murdoch Nicholson had enlisted as a medic and was gassed, dying shortly after returning to England. She had two siblings.

After her father remarried, the family moved to Crank Post Office where they provided residents with fresh bread, cakes and pastries that they baked on the premises.

She worked in a shop on Park Road and in the canteen at Pilkington's Head Office until she retired. She never got married or had children, but she took care of her sister when she was ill at the end of her life. She lived in her home until she was 102 years old.

COVID-19 Survival[]

In 2020, at the age of 105, she contracted COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic, but she had successfully recovered.

On 31 December 2020 (New Year’s Eve), Nicholson tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time. As of January 2021, few days before turning 106, she had successfully recovered, making her the oldest known person to survive the COVID-19 it twice (at the time).

In 2021, she broke her hip twice, undergoing major surgery.

Nicholson died at Elizabeth Court Care Home around 4 August 2022 in St Helens, Merseyside, England, UK, at the age of 107 years, c.204 days. At the time of her death, she was the fourth-oldest known living person in Merseyside, behind John Tinniswood, Kathleen Mabel Fairhurst, and Marjorie Ethel Hodnett.
