Mary Provost-Slocum (née Tiriolo; 19 January 1912 – 18 June 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known person living in the U.S. state of Connecticut.

Biography[]

Mary Provost-Slocum was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA on 19 January 1912. Her parents were Italian immigrants Bruno Tiriolo (1881–1984) and Carmella Morabito-Tiriolo (1893–1971). She had four siblings: Patrick Tiriolo (1916–1970), Joseph Tiriolo (1918–1990), Grace LaRusso (born 1921), and Mildred Popp (born 1927).

Provost-Slocum worked as a phone company operator, waitress, and even as a switchboard operator for Empire Brush Works. Later, she was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and at Nathaniel Witherell.

Provost-Slocum married Earl Ellsworth Slocum in 1932. They moved to a house in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1950. He died in 1967. Her second husband, Joseph Provost, died in 1981.

Provost-Slocum celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian in January 2022. There was also a history of longevity in her family: her father lived to be 103, her sister Grace LaRusso (born 21 March 1921), is still alive aged 103 years, 260 days, and her sister Mildred "Millie" Popp (born 10 June 1927), is still alive aged 97 years, 179 days.

Provost-Slocum became the oldest known living person in Connecticut following the death of Antoinette Davis on 25 December 2021.

Provost-Slocum died in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA on 18 June 2023 at the age of 111 years, 150 days. Following her death, Millie Johnson became the oldest known living person in Connecticut.
