Masao Horie [Japanese: 堀江正夫] (16 June 1915 – 20 March 2022) was a Japanese centenarian, former army officer, ground self-defense officer, and politician. He was a member of the House of Councillors.

Biography[]

Early Life and Family[]

Masao Horie was born in Niigata Prefecture, Japan on 16 June 1915. He was the second son of Hideichi Horie [Japanese: 堀江英一], the principal of a fishery school. His older brother, Fumihiko Horie [Japanese: 堀江文彦], was graduated from the Navy Institutional School.

He married Yasuko Horie (18 February 1923 – 3 March 2017), a culinary researcher; she was the elder daughter of Kenichi Takahashi, the second son of businessman Genjiro Takahashi. His daughter Hiroko Horie (born 1 May 1947) and his granddaughter Sawako Horie [Japanese: ほりえさわこ] later also became culinary reserachers.

Military Career[]

After graduating from Niigata Prefectural Itoigawa Senior High School, Tokyo Army Childhood School (34th term), and army preparatory course, Horie graduated from Imperial Japanese Army Academy in December 1937. During his time in the military, he was an infantry officer. He graduated from the Army War College during World War II in Asia (57th term).

At the end of World War II, Horie was a soldier in the Japanese 18th Army. He served in New Guinea.

After the end of the war, Horie was demobilized. In March 1946, he engaged in forestry in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture (his wife's hometown). He worked for the ground self-defense force through the National Police Reserve, later renamed the National Safety Forces. He retired as deputy chief of staff in 1973.

Later Life[]

After retiring, Horie served two terms as a member of the House of Councillors (from 1977 to 1989). He ran for the liberal democratic party. He also served as president of the Japan Veterans Association from 1989 to 1999. He has been the president of Eirei-ni-Kotaeru-Kai (Group to Honor the Souls of the War Heroes), and is the current honorary president.

On 25 December 2019, a book (whose title is "100歳まで元気でボケない食事術") was published, introducing Horie's still healthy diet and gymnastics over the age of 100.

Horie died in Tokyo, Japan on 20 March 2022 at the age of 106 years, 277 days.
