Mateo Palaversic [Croatian: Mateo Palaveršić] (14 July 1906 – 15 September 2012) was a Croatian centenarian who was the oldest known living man and person in Croatia at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Mateo Palaversic was born in Sutivan, Split-Dalmatia County, Austria-Hungary (present-day Croatia), on 14 July 1906. His parents were Simun Palaversic and Dinka Palaversic. He had two older sisters, Anita (1902-1989) and Danica (1905-2001). His wife was a Josica Marija Palaversic (Nonveiller; 1913-2002), who died on 6 January 2002 at the age of 88. Together with his wife Marija he had one daughter Vera Skataretiko. Not much is known about his life, because it was learned about him only after his death.
On 16 August 2009, following the death of 104-year-old Franjo Horvat, he became the oldest known living man in Croatia.
On 25 December 2011, following the death of 107-year-old Samuel Bistirlić of the United States, he became the oldest known living Croatian-born man.
On 9 May 2012, following the death of 106-year-old Lina Miljan, he became the oldest known living person in Croatia.
Mateo Palaversic died in Kastela, Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia, on 15 September 2012, at the age of 106 years, 63 days. He was buried in his hometown of Sutivan. Following his death, then 105-year-old Paulina Prodan became the oldest known living person in Croatia, and then 104-year-old Andrija Prlic became the oldest known living man in Croatia.
