Mateo Palaversic [Croatian: Mate Palaveršić] (14 July 1906 – 15 September 2012) was a Croatian centenarian who was the oldest known living man and person in Croatia at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Mateo Palaversic was born in Sutivan, Split-Dalmatia County, Austria-Hungary, (present-day Croatia) on 14 July 1906. His parents were Simun Palaversic and Dinka Palaversic. He had two older sisters, Anita (1902-1989) and Danica (1905-2001). His wife was a Josica Marija Palaversic (Nonveiller; 1913-2002), who died on 6 January 2002 at the age of 88. Together with his wife Marija he had one daughter Vera Skataretiko. Not much is known about his life, because it was learned about him only after his death.
He became the oldest known living man in Croatia, following the death of 104-year-old Franjo Horvat on 16 August 2009. On 25 December following the death of 107-year-old Samuel Bistirlich of United States, he became the oldest known living Croatian-born man. Following the death of 106-year-old Lina Miljan on 9 May 2012, he became the oldest known living person in Croatia.
Mateo Palaversic died in Split, Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia on 15 September 2012 at the age of 106 years, 63 days. He was buried in his hometown of Sutivan. Following his death, then 104-year-old Andrija Prlic became the oldest known living man in Croatia and then 105-year-old Paulina Prodan, became the oldest known living person in Croatia.
