Matilda Lewis (16 May 1896 – 30 June 2009) was a Guyanese supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is the oldest known person ever from Guyana.
Biography[]
Matilda Lewis claimed to have been born in Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana on 16 May 1896. Her mother was a Barbadian who had relocated to Guyana. She was never married and was always known for her modesty.
In May 1996, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
Matilda Lewis died at Salvation Army Women’s Home on Bent and Haley Streets in Wortmanville, Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana on 30 June 2009 at the age of 113 years, 45 days. She was the 2nd oldest living person in the Caribbean behind Eugenie Blanchard of Saint Barts and was the 10 oldest living person in the World at the time of her death. Following her death, then 108-year-old Ismay Spooner became the oldest living person in Guyana.
