Matsu Sugiyama [Japanese: 杉山まつ] (10 January 1907 – 23 April 2017) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

Biography

Matsu Sugiyama was born on 10 January 1907 in Japan. She lived her last years in the nursing home Kaijuen [Japanese: 開寿園] in Tenno Ward, Fujieda. In October 2015, she was offered a box of hand-rolled tea.

Sugiyama became the oldest person in Shizuoka Prefecture on 21 March 2017, following the death of 110-year-old Sadako Watanabe.

Matsu Sugiyama held that title for a little over a month, before passing away at 10 a.m. Japanese time on 23 April 2017 in Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan at the age of 110 years, 103 days. The cause of her death was reported to be old age. Her successor as Shizuoka Prefecture’s oldest person was Fumi Eto (1907 – 2017).
