Annie Matilda "Maud" Nicholl (3 July 1909 – 19 September 2019) was a British supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in Northern Ireland.
Biography[]
Maud Nicholl was born in Ballymena, Ireland, United Kingdom (now Northern Ireland, UK) on 3 July 1909. Her family lived in the Dan’s Road area. She had at least one brother, Joe Nicholl. After the death of her mother, she looked after her father and brother. She never learned to drive a car. Her brother had a car, but according to Nicholl: "he wouldn't trust me with it so I never learned". Nicholl said she was a good student at school, however she left school when she was 16 years old and then worked for a while in Ballymena for a manufacturers. She never married. Nicholl's second cousin, Maureen Luke, had been looking after her since 1999. She was a member of Wellington Presbyterian Church.
On her 108th birthday in 2017, Nicholl said that she never had any illnesses and that she went to see the doctor only once, she had to get an antibiotic. For some time, she had lived in her own home at Woodgreen near Ballymena. In 2018, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Lindsay Millar, congratulated Nicholl on her 109th birthday and presented her with a flowers and a birthday card. She celebrated her 110th birthday in July 2019. A party was held at Glenkeen House care home in Randalstown. She was visited by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council Mayor Maureen Morrow and Deputy Mayor, Beth Adger. Nicholl's second cousins Maureen Luke and Jean Bell were also present. At that time, she said that the secret to her long life was: "No smoking, no drinking and …no men!"
Maud Nicholl died in Randalstown, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK on 19 September 2019 at the age of 110 years, 78 days.
Her age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek and Oliver Trim, and (posthumously) validated by the GRG on 18 December 2020.
