Mercedes de la Asuncion Brenes Estrada (15 August 1910 – 5 July 2024) was a Nicaraguan supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is the oldest person to have ever lived in Nicaragua.

Biography[]

Mercedes Brenes Estrada was born in Jinotepe, Carazo Department, Nicaragua, on 15 August 1910. At the age of 30, she married Manuel Lopez Mayorga, an industrial worker, and the couple went on to have six children (three sons and three daughters). In 2005, she traveled to Costa Rica and the United States. She underwent eye surgery when she turned 100.

In August 2016, her three daughters were still alive: Maria, Rosario and Anita. Her daughter, Rosario de los Angeles Lopez Brenes, lived in Miami, Florida, but has visited her in Nicaragua on her 106th birthday. At that time, she also had 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was known as "Mayita". At the age of 106, she was able to read without glasses. In August 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

On 26 March 2022, following the death of 112-year-old Marcelina Arauz de Maure of Panama, she became the oldest living person in Central America.

Mercedes Brenes Estrada died in Managua, Managua Department, Nicaragua on 5 July 2024 at the age of 113 years, 325 days.
