Alice "Midge" de la Haye (26 November 1913 - 13 April 2022) was a centenarian from Jersey.

Biography[]

Midge de la Haye was born in Saint Mary, Jersey, UK on 26 November 1913. She married Albert de la Haye in 1935. The couple had three sons (two of whom now deceased).

She and her three children were evacuated to Southampton during the World War II before travelling north to Wakefield, in Yorkshire, where they remained until they could return to Jersey. Meanwhile, her husband joined the British Army as a dispatcher and was posted to North Africa and Italy.

Upon her return to Jersey, she worked at the Jersey Island Exquisite Knitting Company for a number of years before running her own fruit-and-vegetable stall in the Central Market.

She and her husband spent the majority of their married life at La Pouquelaye before moving to St Ouen in 1975. During their retirement, the couple travelling across Europe in a Fiat camper van and spent time in New Zealand and China as well.

Her husband died in 1990. In 2018 at the age of 103, she moved into the Maison St. Brelade care home.

As of November 2021, she has one living son (aged 85), eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Her secret to a long life is: one garlic tablet a day, good for your bones and a little tipple on a Monday, good for your sanity.

Midge de la Haye died on 13 April 2022 at Maison St. Brelade care home in La Corbiere, Jersey, UK, at the age of 108 years and 138 days. At the time of her death she was the oldest known living person in Jersey.
