Centenarian

Mihael Jersic (Slovenian: Mihael Jeršič) (28 September 1913 – October 2020) was a Slovenian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Slovenia at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Mihael Jeršič was born in the village of Rovte, Logatec, Central Slovenia, Austria-Hungary (now Slovenia), on 28 September 1913. He was the youngest child in the family. He lost his mother at the age of four and his father remarried, but died when Mihael was eight years old.

With the help of his older brother, he trained as a toolmaker and went to Germany to improve his professional skills. After returning to present-day Slovenia, he induced plumbing and central heating systems until retirement. In his professional career he often led projects on large buildings in present-day Slovenia and abroad.

He married his wife Zlata at the age of 28. The couple had three children, all sons (two of them alive at his 105th birthday in 2018). After retiring, he moved back to his birth house in Rovte. At the age of 105, he still lived independently. At that time, he had two children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

On 14 July 2020, following the death of 107-year-old Rafael Merkelj, he became the oldest known living man in Slovenia.

Mihael Jeršič died of Covid-19 sometime between 1 and 25 October 2020, at the age of 107 years, 10+ days. He was buried in Brežice cemetery. Following his death, then-104-year-old Jože Pogačnik became the oldest known living man in Slovenia.
