Mijo Martinovic-Rasic [Bosnian; Mijo Martinović-Rasić] (13 September 1917 – 12 November 2022) was a Bosnian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Martinovic was born in the village of Mamici, Siroki Brijeg, Austria-Hungary (present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina) on 13 September 1917.
He was a good soldier in the 13th Regiment. There were many things, but the worst was in 1945. Martinovic took part in the liberation struggles during the World War II.
He has never been ill Thousands of small details, supported by names and places of events, Mijo states as if they happened yesterday. Not to stop and deviate from the topic, perhaps because he hears poorly or uses the opportunity to talk. Mijo has been living alone for many years, his wife died a long time ago. The children, eight of them, mostly do not live in Mamici today. They finished high school and today they live in Split, Rijeka, Porec, Belgium and elsewhere, and there is only one left in Mamici.
He became the oldest known living man in Bosnia and Herzegovina, following the death of 107-year-old Anto Kovac on 14 February 2022.
In October 2022, he fell and broke his right hip, which required surgery. To the hospital in Mostar, he was admitted on 21 October and the operation was successfully performed on 25 October 2022 at the SKB Mostar health facility, thereby becoming the oldest operated patient ever operated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because previously the oldest operated patient was Dragoljub Galic (1909-2018) who had a pacemaker implanted at the age of 104. Martinovic was transferred to the general hospital in Široki Brijeg after the operation, where he failed to cope with the consequences caused by the fracture of the right hip and the operation.
Martinovic died a few weeks later in the hospital in Široki Brijeg, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 12 November 2022 at the age of 105 years, 60 days. He was buried in his village Mamići near Široki Brijeg.
