Moy Kim Ng (3 July 1911 – 9 January 2020) was a Chinese-New Zealand centenarian who was the oldest known living person in New Zealand at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Moy Kim Ng was born in China on 3 July 1911. As a young woman, she wed Fook Ying Ng in an arranged marriage. Her husband immigrated to New Zealand in 1946 to work in market gardens, and three years later, she and their five children followed on a three-month boat journey. Her family settled in Ashburton and the couple had three more children. Her husband died of cancer in 1960.
In spite of speaking little English, she worked at a market garden, Chinese restaurant and a on a poultry farm while raising children. And she was still able to send money to family in China. She had 25 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She turned 100 on 2 July 2011, and could care for herself until the age of 104, when she moved into St Andrew’s Home and Hospital.
She became the oldest known living person in New Zealand following the death of 109 year-old Lola de la Haye on 9 July 2019.
Moy Kim Ng died in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand on 9 January 2020 at the age of 108 years, 190 days. Following her death, Nina Brown (18 September 1911 – 29 May 2020) became the oldest (known) living person in New Zealand.
