Nancy Vaz Ferreira (neé Barcellos; 17 March 1904 – 30 December 2015) was a Brazilian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Nancy Vaz Ferreira was born on 17 March 1904 in Viamao, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to parents Podalirio Barcellos and Maria Salome da Silva Barcellos. She had 10 siblings and was raised in a farm. She later married Podalirio Vaz Ferreira Sobrinho, a military man who was a few years younger than her. Her sister Ercilia died in childbirth, so she raised her nieces Eva Any and Rosa Salome, whom she considered her daughters. Her husband died in 2009 at the age of 102 years.

In the 1940s, she lived for 10 years in Rio de Janeiro due to her husband's work. Out of boredom she took up sewing to pass the time - a hobby which would soon become a profession. She worked as a stylist, applying her talent mainly to party dresses. However, her career stalled when she and her husband returned south, at a time when strict customs did not allow women to work professionally. However, she still enjoyed sewing as a hobby, which she continued until she was around 110, and only quit due to her failing eyesight.

Nancy died of natural causes in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on 30 December 2015 at the age of 111 years, 288 days.
