Nancy Stewart (16 October 1913 – 10 September 2021) was an Irish centenarian who was the oldest known living woman in Ireland following the death of 107-year-old Peg O'Sullivan on 29 April 2021, and the second-oldest known living Irish person (behind Michael O'Connor) at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Nancy Stewart was born in Clonard, County Meath, Ireland on 16 October 1913. Growing up in Castlerickard near Longwood, she was one of six siblings. Her father worked as a blacksmith. As a child, she experienced the the Irish War of Independence firsthand, where she recalled hiding from troops in a farm field across the road to her house.
She married Bob Stewart in 1938, and the couple moved to their home in Clonard, where Nancy remains today, over 82 years later. The two were dairy farmers, sending their milk to a company called Hughes’s Dairy, located in Dublin. The couple had 5 daughters and one son, and were the first family in their town to own a car.
In 1989, Nancy and her husband were in a serious car crash while on their way to attend church. Both were seriously injured, with Bob dying from his injuries a week after the accident. Nancy was also badly injured, suffering a broken jaw and remained hospitalized for several days, unable to attend her husband's funeral. In the last decade, Nancy’s twin daughters, Margaret and Anne, have also passed away.
Her eldest child, Bob, was aged 83 in 2020. She has 64 grandchildren, as well as several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She lived completely on her own well into her centenarian years, maintaining full independence until a fall on Christmas Eve 2018 left her with a broken hip. Despite this injury, she is still able to walk around her home with the aid of a walker. In addition to her good physical health, her mind is still sharp, and enjoys reading the newspaper.
When asked for longevity advice, she said to "eat plenty of plain food and get a good dinner, whatever you’re fond of." She is a lifelong teetotaler and has never smoked.
Nancy Stewart died in Clonard, County Meath, Ireland on 20 September 2021 at the age of 107 years, 329 days.
