Napoleon "Paul" Ryder (né Reiter; 7 March 1893 – 31 December 2001) was a Romanian-born British centenarian who was the oldest known man ever born in Romania until Dumitru Comanescu surpassed his age on 17 September 2017.
Biography[]
Napoleon Ryder was born as Napoleon Reiter in Bucharest, Austria-Hungary (now Romania) on 7 March 1893 (claimed 1892). His parents were Leopold Reiter and Sophie Reiter.
In the 1950s, he was accused of fraud and perjury, and was sentenced to 7 years in prison, of which he served a few months before the conviction was overturned.
He married Henrietta Gaster and had at least three children (including Leo Ryder). Henrietta died in 1995.
On 30 July 2001 at the age of 108 years, 145 days, he surpassed the age of Dumitrascu Lacatusu, becoming the oldest known man ever born in Romania.
Napoleon Ryder died in Surrey, England, UK on 31 December 2001 at the age of 108 years, 299 days (claimed 109 years, 299 days). At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest known living man in the United Kingdom, behind Frederick Moore.
