Narcissa Elizabeth Jane Rickman (née Nicholson; 13 September 1855 – 21 October 1968) was a validated American supercentenarian who, at the time of her death, was the world's oldest living person. She was also the fourth person on record to reach the age of 113, after Delina Filkins, Betsy Baker, and Mary Kelly.
Biography
Narcissa Rickman was born as Narcissa Elizabeth Jane Nicholson in a log cabin in Rosman, Henderson County, North Carolina, to parents Evan Pearson Nicholson and Rebecca Elizabeth Nicholson. She was a Sunday School teacher. She was married to Nicholas Rickman from 1882 until his death in 1901.
On her 112th birthday in 1967, it was mentioned that she was four feet tall. She lived with a granddaughter at the time. She was still sociable and mentally alert in 1967. However, she fell and broke her hip that year in June. She had broken her hip already when she was 95 years old. Rickman was subsequently taken to the hospital, where she stayed for 13 days. She became wheelchair-bound. She also fractured some ribs at another occasion. Her eyesight was said to be poor at 112, and she couldn’t read books any longer. She liked to read the Bible and encyclopedias. She attributed her longevity to ”the good lord”.
She spent her 113th birthday in 1968 at a hospital for a case of the common cold.
Rickman died on 21 October 1968, at the age of 113 years, 38 days.
