Centenarian

Naudean Amalia Ernestine Amidon (née Johnson; 5 February 1912 – 3 October 2021) was an American centenarian who was one of the oldest known living people in the U.S. state of Ohio at the time of her death.

Biography[]

Early Life and Family[]

Naudean Amidon was born as Naudean Amalia Ernestine Johnson in Ashtabula, Ohio, USA on 5 February 1912. She was one of six daughters born to Ernest S. Johnson and Selma (née Nelson) Johnson. Her five sisters (all of whom she outlived) were Edith Graham, Irene Krebs, Ruth Johnson, Dorothy Fassett, and Hazel Peterson.

On 1 April 1928, Amidon joined the First Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula. During her last years, she had been the church’s oldest active member until her death in 2021.

Amidon married Mose C. "Bud" Amidon Jr. on 12 June 1940. Her husband was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashtabula, where he served as a deacon for six years. He died in 1999 at the age of 83.

Amidon graduated from Kent State University in 1931. She taught for 31 years as a second grade teacher at the Chestnut Street School in Ashtabula. She also taught for six years in Newton Falls, Ohio, and for three years in Farnham, Ohio.

Later Life and Death[]

After her retirement, Amidon was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the Sorosis Club of Ada, and the Ada Senior Citizens.

In her later years, Amidon was always surprised by the birthday cards that were given to her and made by her niece Nancy Blake.

Amidon attributed her longevity to staying happy and positive, as well as the great medical care she received during her later life. She was grateful for her caregivers who helped her to stay in her home, and to help her live for a long time, which meant a lot to her. She was especially thankful for Tina Moots, who had lived with her for over 20 years, her very special nurse Joyce Barga, and the care given to her by her doctor, Dr. Abby.

Naudean Amidon died in Ada, Ohio, USA on 3 October 2021, at the age of 109 years, 240 days. She was survived by her daughters Carole Lazor and Jean Beckley, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is buried at the Edgewood Cemetery in Ashtabula.
