Centenarian

Nedelcho Mavrov Boikov (Bulgarian: Неделчо Мавров Бойков; 4 April 1912 – 5 March 2020) was a Bulgarian centenarian who was Bulgaria's oldest known living person from the passing of Matena Zokova on 4 July 2018 until his own death in March 2020. He is also the oldest known man ever from Bulgaria.

Biography[]

Nedelcho was born on 4 April 1912 (claimed 1911) in the village of the Merhamli (present-day village of Peplos), Evros, then part of Adrianople Vilayet, Ottoman Empire. He himself claimed to have been born in 1911, but records support birth in 1912. His family moved to the village of Kostur, Haskovo Province, Bulgaria when Nedelcho was 7-8 years old. His father died at the age of 96 and one brother died at the age of 93. He was veteran of the World War II.

In 1950, he moved to Svilengrad, Haskovo Province. At the age of 87, he had an eye surgery. He never smoked. In April 2012, he celebrated his 100th birthday and became a centenarian. Even as a centenarian, he still had a sharp memory and a sense of humor. He claimed that the secret of longevity is in the long walks. He never suffered from any serious illness. In 2017, he had four living children, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. One of his brothers died at the age of 99, few days prior to Nedelcho's 106th birthday.

Nedelcho was allegedly the oldest living man in Bulgaria, since the death of Pavel Vasilev Hristov on 30 May 2017 and the oldest living person in Bulgaria since the death of Matena Zokova on 4 July 2018. He lived with his daughter-in-law.

Boikov died in Svilengrad, Haskovo Province, Bulgaria on 5 March 2020 at the age of 107 (claimed 108) years, 336 days. Following his death, the then 107-year-old Nurie Dermendzieva became the oldest known living person in Bulgaria and then 106-year-old Georgi Iliev Georgiev became the oldest known living man in Bulgaria.
