Nellie "Nell" Maude Johnson (16 December 1906 – 3 November 2017) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2024.
Biography
Early life
Nellie Maude Johnson was born in Loudon, Tennessee, USA, on 16 December 1906. She was one of 11 children of Joseph and Minnie Walton Johnson. She grew up with five sisters, Misses Clara, Cleo, Willie Joe, Daisy, and Elizabeth Johnson and four brothers, Richard, Van, James, and Eugene Johnson. She moved to Morristown at a young age, graduated from Morristown High School and also attended Morristown College. Nellie worked all of her life as a homemaker for many families and devoted her life to her church, family, and job. She never married and had no children.
She was also an active member of Young’s Temple A.M.E Zion Church where she had many roles in the church including Sunday school teacher. Nell was a class leader for fifty years and participated as a choir member, member of the Women’s Home and Over Seas Missionary Society, active in Christian Endeavor, and was on the Stewardess Board.
Late life
In the early 2000s, Nellie Johnson and her sister, Daisy (who died in 2006), moved to the Heritage Center. She was a babysitter for many years in Morristown, Tennessee.
Even in her 100s, she was able to read her Bible and the newspaper. She credited her longevity to honesty, hard work and her love for the Lord.
