Nina Valjalo (née Fiorovic; 6 July 1908 – 29 October 2018) was a Croatian supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in Croatia at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Nina Fiorovic was born in the village of Vodovadja, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Austria-Hungary (present-day Croatia) on 6 July 1908. She lived in the Konavle during her early childhood and had quite good memories of her childhood. Her family had a house, shelter and accommodation in Debeli Brijeg. During World War I, she didn't attended school. During first two grades of the primary school, she attended school in the village of Plocice, but lived in the village of Mikulici with her grandmother. Later, she attended school in Herceg Novi (present-day Montenegro) and later in the village of Mikulici where her mother was born. Her father was a boat captain.
In May 1931, she married Miho Valjalo who had a company in Dubrovnik called "Auto Excursion". They had two children: Miho (son) and Pavica (daughter).
Her husband died after 18 years of marriage in 1949. They traveled a lot during her husband's life. Prior to start of World War II, her husband bought a house and shop in Zeljarica Street, Dubrovnik. In 1979, her house in Zeljarica Street was damaged during the earthquake. She moved to Lapad peninsula to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Her son died in 1993. Nina was the grandmother of Croatia's Minister of Culture, Nina Obuljen Korzinek.
She became the oldest known living person in Croatia, following the death of 107-year-old Izolda Krmpotic on 13 September 2014.
Nina Valjalo died in Dubrovnik, Croatia on 29 October 2018 at the age of 110 years, 115 days. Following her death, then 108-year-old Andja Peric, became the oldest known living person in Croatia.
