Nora Canavan (née Mullins) (9 March 1908 – 19 July 2016) was an Irish centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Ireland since the death of Molly Madden on 16 January 2016 until her own death six months later.
Biography[]
Nora Canavan was born as Nora Mullins in Ireland (then part of the UK), on 9 March 1908 to a farming family in Ennistymon. She was named after one of her aunts, who lived to the age of 105. Her earliest memory that she could remember was the birth of her sister Bridget when she was 7. Canavan also recalled memories from the Easter Rising and the Irish War of Independence, including an ambush near her family farm.
Nora met Stephen Canavan at a neighbor's house during a dance party, and they married in 1928. They had seven children together. At the time of her death, Nora had 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
In her later years, Nora enjoyed knitting and gardening. She credited her secret to longevity as "to be careful with money and to live a good honest life".
Following Molly Madden's death, Canavan became the oldest living person in Ireland. She died on 19 July 2016 at the age of 108, and was buried at the Holy Rosary Church in Doolin. Sarah Clancy of County Galway became the oldest living Irish person after her death.
