Nurie Dermendzieva [Bulgarian; Нурие Дерменджиева] (25 October 1912 – 12 January 2023) was a Bulgarian supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Bulgaria at the time of her death. She is also the second-oldest known person ever from Bulgaria, behind Karamfila Stoyanova. Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.
Biography[]
Nurie Dermendzieva was born in Dabovo, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria on 25 October 1912. She grew up with many sisters and brothers in the settlement of Madan in Dabovo. She married at the age of 26 and gave birth to 6 children one after the other. She raised her children almost alone. Her husband, Rexhep, was four years younger than her and died of silicosis in 1952 when he was only 36 years. At that time her family lived in the village of Rustan, which is now completely deserted and has no permanent residents.
She was very healthy until she was 80 and did not go to the hospital for long. She then suffered three minor strokes, but over a relatively long period of time, not one after the other. Doctors said that was the reason why she was in good health. Due to her illness, her bile was removed, but this operation did not significantly affect her.
She was a peasant. All her life she worked in the fields and picked tobacco, grew potatoes and beans. She always had cow and milk and homemade butter. Since they were a family with many children, she never worked in government jobs to have free time to raise children. She retired as a farmer.
On 2 August 2017 at the age of 105 she had surgery on her right eye. After the operation, she did not want to come for an examination, but the doctors learned from her relatives that she was fine. It was exciting for them not only to touch a person of that age, but also to be able to help "and do the operation," said Dr. Petar Janev, head of the operational team. She successfully recovered and continued to live.
She became the oldest living person in Bulgaria, following the death of 107-year-old Nedelcho Boikov on 5 March 2020. During the 2022 census, it was officially confirmed that she is the oldest person in Bulgaria by the bureau of population statistics of Bulgaria.
Her third son Asen died in 2021 after a very difficult COVID-19. Her daughters: Myumyune, Emine and Chrysanthemum, are married in Byala Reka, Tarun and Smolyan. Each of the children takes care of their mother on the principle of rotation, she has never been deprived of care. Her eldest son Ramadan was 80 in May 2022, and her daughter-in-law was 79. In May 2022, of all her children, Nurie had 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Dermendzieva died in the village of Srednogorci, Smolyan Province, Bulgaria on 12 January 2023 at the age of 110 years, 79 days.
