Biography[]

Owen Filer was born in Pontnewydd, Wales, UK on 19 October 1919. In 1934, when he was 14, he left school, and began working by feeding chickens and pigs at the Cwmbran Gardens Hotel.

In 1940, Filer was called up to serve in World War II. He served in the Ninth Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in North Wales. In 1944, he was posted to serve in Bombay, but was later sent home when he received news that his father was on his deathbed. However, after he made the long journey back, his father had already died two weeks before.

While posted in North Wales for training, Filer met his wife Laura at a milk bar in Llandudno. They married in 1943, and had four children. Laura died from a stroke in 2004, after 60 years of marriage.

Filer has lived in the Cwmbran area all his life. He celebrated his 100th birthday in October 2019.

Filer gained notoriety in January 2020 for his remarkably youthful appearance. When ITV news reporter Rob Osbourne was in the streets of Newport, he spotted Filer: when interviewing him, he was stunned to learn he was 100 years old. The clip of the encounter became viral on social media.
