Pal Patay [Hungarian: Patay Pál] (8 December 1914 – 4 October 2020) was a Hungarian centenarian, archeologist, museologist, and author.

Biography[]

Pal Patay was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary (now Hungary) on 8 December 1914. His parents were Tibor Patay and Iphigenia Pronay. He had two brothers: Jozsef Patay and Sandor Patay.

He graduated from the Reformed Grammar School in Budapest in 1932. In 1935 he obtained a degree in agriculture at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Agriculture in Debrecen (now Debrecen University of Agricultural Sciences). On 26 February 1939, he received his doctorate in archeology from the Pazmany Peter University in Budapest (now ELTE).

From 1 September 1939, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Archeology. He served as a reserve artillery lieutenant and was in Russian captivity between 8 February 1945 and 22 June 1947, after a short front service.

From 16 May 1950, he worked at the Paloc Museum in Balassagyarmat, and from 19 January 1957 to 31 December 1982, he was an archaeologist at the Hungarian National Museum. He retired as deputy head of department at the museum's repository on 30 June 1988. He worked part-time as a scientific adviser from 1 July 1993 to 31 January 1995.

He was the author of around 15 books, his last one was published in 2018. He still gave public lectures at the age of 104 (sitting in his wheelchair, as he was an amputee). In February 2020, he received the very first sapphire diploma (which is given 80 years after obtaining a degree) in the four-century-old history of the Eotvos Lorand University of Sciences.

There was also a history of longevity in his family: his mother lived to be 91, his maternal grandfather Dezso Pronay (1848–1940) lived to be 91, his brother Jozsef Patay (1908–2007) lived to be 99, and his brother Sandor Patay (1910–2011) lived to be 101.

Patay died in Hungary on 4 October 2020 at the age of 105 years, 301 days. At the time of his death, he was the one of oldest living men in Hungary.
