Panagioula Stefanidaki [Greek: Παναγιούλα Στεφανιδάκη] (15 October 1914 – 12 July 2023) was a Greek centenarian who was the second-oldest known living person in Greece at the time of her death, behind Kallistheni Meleonitou.
Biography[]
Panagioula Stefanidaki was born in Kalymnos, South Aegean, Greece on 15 October 1914 as the child of Christos Elenis and his wife, Themelina. She married at the age of 21, on 23 December 1935, Michail (Michalis) Stefanidakis who was born in Alikarnassos to a father from Crete and a mother from Kos. Panagioula and Michail had five boys and five girls (Nikolas, Christos, Pantelis, Giannis, Kostas, Themelina, Sevasti, Angeliki, Georgia, Maria). As of 2021 only the eight children were still alive (Christos and Pantelis had died). Panagioula as of 2021 also had 44 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
All 10 children emigrated to Australia. Mrs. Panagioula and her husband Michalis stayed in Kalymnos and made some trips to Australia to see their children. In fact, on a trip to Australia at Christmas 1974, it was then that the city of Darwin was destroyed by Cyclone Tracy. Maria Stefanidaki Vlasserou, her little daughter and her family returned permanently to Greece in December 2018, and just then took Panagioula in Corfu, Greece where they lived. Before, Panagioula lived in the nursing home of Kalymnos, with breaks, for about 4 years in total. Panagioula's 8 children who are alive, four live in Australia, two in Kalymnos, one in Kos and Maria the youngest in Corfu.
She became the second-oldest known living person in Greece, following the death of 111-year-old Ioanna Proiou-Dimitriadou on 5 April 2023.
Panagioula Stefanidaki died in Corfu, Greece on 12 July 2023 at the age of 108 years, 270 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Greece, after Kallistheni Meleonitou who was ten months older.
