Philippe Vocanson (20 October 1904 – 17 January 2015) was a validated French supercentenarian who was, at the age of 110, the oldest man in Europe at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Vocanson was born on 20 October 1904 in the small village of Saint-Jeures in Haute-Loire, France, as one of eight siblings. One of his sisters lived to the age of 108. In his younger days, he worked as a shoemaker and a farmer. He married in 1927. During WWII, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war by the Germans in northern France. He became a widower in 1985. In 2000, he moved to the Buisson nursing home. He had two children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He drank little alcohol, and put his longevity down to a diet of cheese and chocolate.[1][2][3]

Philippe Vocanson became the oldest known man in France following the death of Emile Turlant on 15 September 2013 and the oldest known man in Europe following the death of Gallai Rezso of Hungary on 25 September 2014.

Vocanson died in Saint-Etienne, Loire, France on 17 January 2015, at the age of 110 years, 89 days.
