Longevity claimant |
Priscilla Scroggins (née Allen; 9 March 1777?/1789 – 17 November 1893) was an American longevity claimant whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). If her claimed age were validated, she would have been the oldest living Methodist church member in the world at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Priscilla Scroggins claimed to have been born as Priscilla Allen in Lancaster County, South Carolina, USA on 9 March 1777 (1779 according to several newspapers articles). Her parents were William Allen (1769–1840) and Elizabeth Shewbert (1767–1812).
Scroggins had been a Methodist church member since the age of 14, in 1791. On 15 December 1805, she married William Freeman Scroggins in Lancaster, South Carolina. The couple had 12 children. William died on 3 January 1863 in East Ellijay, Gilmer County, Georgia, USA.
In November 1892, Scroggins was reported to be the oldest living person in Georgia.
Priscilla Scroggins died in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia, USA on 17 November 1893, at the claimed age of 116 years, 253 days.
Age Issues[]
According to some genealogy websites, Scroggins was born on 8 March 1789, making her twelve (or ten) years younger than claimed.[1][2] An article of 1891 also says she was aged 104 instead of 114 (it could be a typo).[3]
