Rachel Turner MacArthur (née Trotter; 26 November 1827 – 10 December 1936) was a British centenarian who was the oldest known living person in the United Kingdom at the time of her death. She was the last known British person born before 1830.

Biography[]

Rachel Turner Trotter was born on 26 November 1827 to John Trotter and Elizabeth Marshall. She married Alexander John MacArthur on 10 June 1856 in Stirling.

In 1921, at the age of 93, she underwent an appendectomy. She voted in the 1931 UK General Election. In 1934 she was visited by the Duke and Duchess of York (the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother). She went for runs in a motor car daily until shortly before her 108th birthday in 1935.

MacArthur died on 10 December 1936 at the age of 109 years, 14 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest Scot ever as well as the oldest person ever to die on the island of Britain. Her successor as Britain's oldest person was Rachel Swain (1830–1938).
