Biography[]

Rachel Nyiramandwa claimed to have been born in German East Africa (now Rwanda) in 1912. She was born at the reign of King Yuhi V Musinga but lost her mother during childhood. She was raised by her aunt who named her ‘Nyiramandwa’. In her later life she lived in Ngiryi, a small village tucked away in Gasaka Sector in the hills of Nyamagabe District, Southern Province, approximately four hours from Kigali. She is also a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi which took lives of her husband and three children. Nyiramandwa survived along with her daughter (currently aged 78) with whom they were still living together.

Nyiramandwa said she is grateful to president Paul Kagame because he gave her a home and cow, and his unwavering support reminds her of her children, husband and relatives who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. She managed to survive the Genocide with her daughter and they settled far away from their ancestral village of Ndiryi because they still feared for their loves. After Gacaca courts helped adjudicate Genocide cases and helped foster reconciliation, the family returned to Ndiryi. In August 2022, Nyiramandwa was visited by president Kagame again.

Nyiramandwa died at Butare University Teaching Hospital in Butare, Rwanda on 30 December 2022 at the claimed age of 110 yesrs. She had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for about a month before her death.
